DUKE’S MAYONNAISE

Duke’s mayonnaise is a staple product in most southeastern kitchen pantries. This regional product does not make it out to the West Coast very often. Melanie informed me of its availability at a local discount store and I took advantage of this opportunity. I acquired a couple of bottles and now had to find some recipes. In the southeast this mayonnaise is used to bind Cole slaw and potato salads. Duke’s does not add any sugar to its product making for a unique flavor. Melanie suggested a recipe for pimento cheese. Pimento cheese is another regional dish from the south. I have to admit I am not very familiar with pimento cheese.

I went straight to Duke’s Mayonnaise web site for this potato salad recipe. It is called “Baton Rouge-Style Potato Salad’ and is found under the recipe tab. All the ingredients were simple enough but together created a delicious salad. We served this with ‘beer can chicken’. It was quit tasty. Did I notice a difference with Duke’s Mayonnaise? Not really.

I needed to try this with a little simpler dish. Some tomato, lettuce and avocado with a dollop of Duke’s should do the trick. It did not taste as sweet as ‘Best Food’ mayonnaise. It was still just mayonnaise though. If you were brought up in the South this may be a flavor that brings back memories. Being a West Coast native, I just do not get it. I will try to make some pimento cheese though.

  1. That's a new one we haven't tried. I am such a Best Foods/Hellmann's fan. Mom used to make a "secret" potato salad that was made with Miracle Whip. We loved it.

  2. What state in the South? My people are all about Hellman's. Never ever heard of this stuff. But I do know about pimento cheese. Makes a mighty fine sandwich. Crap. Now I'm missing such fine delicacies as Vienna sausages and fried Spam. Need to go find that recipe for Vienna sausages cooked in grape jelly.

And Greg, your mom used Miracle Whip in the potato salad? My family used Miracle Whip for everything except the potato salad. For that you need mayonnaise.

  3. Greg, Mom allays makes the best potato salad. This recipe was pretty good.

Kalyn, I have no idea what state. Duke's is only distributed in the south east area of the U.S. So you probably know better than I.

  4. Kailyn, After reading Duke's website, they mention, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Missouri.I know Missouri is not a southern state. It definitely is not normally available in the Northern and Western states.

  5. I'd been a Hellman's man my entire life then saw several Duke's ads in E. Tenn. and decided to give it a try. I did blind taste tests at various times of the day and found I preferred the Dukes by just a little.

  6. I've never had the opportunity to try Dukes. In Colorado we have both Hellman's and Best Foods and I think they're great. I also think they're made by the same company. Anyway, glad to see you post about Dukes. I don't feel so anxious about never being able to buy it.

    What happened to your Raiders???

  7. Big Dude, You know I just have never gave mayonnaise a big thought. To me it is just a kitchen staple. I have had fun trying Duke's and will be making some pimento cheese.

Lea Ann, Lea Ann, Why did you have to bring up the thorn in my shoulder pad. On any given Sunday. Wager for Raiders v Bronco's? Dukes does not distribute to Co. unless it is a special purchase, like we got.
