THROWDOWN IN THE VINEYARDS

A brand new KCBS contest has emerged this year on the bbq circuit. It is titled the Throwdown in The Vineyards and is held at the Ironstone Vineyards in Murphy's California. It was a beautiful day for a bbq contest. The weather was is the high 70's to make a perfect setting for a four meat contest consisting of chicken, ribs, pork and my favorite brisket. The Ironstone winery is a beautiful venue and had something for everyone today.

The local football team had parking lot duties to make sure festival attendees did not deposited their vehicles in the beautiful vineyards. Twenty professional teams showed up for battle today. Several teams also vended bbq to feed the hungry participants. A cornhole tournament was held to attract even more bbq hungry players.

Ironstone winery was the perfect host for today's event. The winery had tastings and pouredglassed of their award winning wines. The grounds were beautiful with a small lake. The competitors were spread out with plenty of room.

Congratulations to the Team Mudville bbq for winning the Grand Championship today. This was another beautiful weekend for bbq I had to finish the day with a hand dipped with chocolate and almond ice cream bar. We cannot wait till next weekend when we can do it all over again.

Same day as the Norco contest; as I understand it the Board must grant a special waiver for same-day contests within a certain radius but I need to revisit the rule.

Mudville's score would've been good for 6th in SoCal the same day.

Nice pics.

Cue the "NorCal judges are low scorers" soundtrack...

Aaron, KCBS politics make almost as much sense as real world politics. I do not know the current mile radius two contest rule but at one time this was the death of the Stockton BBQ contest. It was held the same weekend as a SoCal event and KCBS would not sanction the Stockton event. I am a little puzzled on the latest ruling on plastic forks for meat retrieval from turn in box. Either way it is decided, does it really matter?

April- "Discussion and Possible Motion To- Eliminate the use of forks for judges during the judging processed with emphasis placed on no licking fingers between categories. Per recommendation of the Rules Committee
Richard Fergola: I Move To- Use Forks For The Pork Category Only During The Judging Process
Second - Jason Cole, Motion Passed"

May- "Dennis (Chair of the CBJ Committee) requested input from the committee regarding the recent BOD decision and ensuing controversy about inclusion of forks in entry boxes for judging process. Following discussion, the committee requested that Dennis make a recommendation to the BOD that, for sanitary reasons, a fork should be made available for all judging boxes, as has been the procedure in the past."

So apparently not putting forks in the box for chicken, ribs & brisket was "controversial." Pick up a rib w/ a fork and I'll fight you.

Aaron, So are you required to use a fork? I am sure they will change their minds several more times.

JP{ said it was optional in the KCBS-mandated script so no, not required. Meanwhile repeatedly hacking up a lung over turn-ins continues to be tolerated...

Aaron, I just did a spit-take over your last comment because I know all to well what you are talking about.

BBQ and wine sounds good to me. I could spend all day trying to find the best meat and wine parings :)

Big Dude, This winery is located in Murphy's California. It is a great location with lots of beautiful scenery and downtown has a lot of eclectic shops for shopping too.
