HOLEY SMOKES

Holy Smokes was a KCBS one-meat competition held at St. Mathew's Church. This was a small block party style fundraiser for the church which had a bbq competition to bring out the competitors. We were there with our judges badges ready to participate.

The one meat was pork ribs with an ancillary category of tri-tip. Today 15 teams set up on the tarmac of the church parking lot. The weather could not of been nicer. The congregation had set up several booths selling various goods and of course bbq. There was even a mobile truck selling adult liquid libations.

Today was a fun day. We reconnected with several friends that we have not seen in several years. The Church hosted a very nice contest and block party for the whole family. We hope that the future will have plenty more bbq events to enjoy.

BAJADERA

We just lived through the bathroom remodel from Hell. Shipping delays and worthless subcontractors made for a very unpleasant and long upgrade of our water closet. Our main contractor was not entirely at fault for our discomfort and was very sympathetic to our plight. He was  from Ukraine and brought us several sweet treats from his home country. He knew that I had a sweet tooth and this was a peace offering. I accepeted.

Bajadera is a praline nougat, enriched with almonds, hazelnuts, and/or walnuts. It is decadently rich and wonderful. I had to wrestle the box away from Ms. Goofy several times. The bathroom is done and the Bajadera have been consumed. I hope I do not have to remodel the kitchen to get some more Bajadera's.

BENICIA VETERANS HALL 3RD ANNUAL RIB COOK-OFF

We judged a bbq rib contest yesterday at our local VFW. This was their third year of hosting a rib contest. We knew a couple of competitors and came to support, as spectators and eat ribs. They found out we were professional bbq judges and enlisted our expertise. This is what we do. We felt privileged and totally enjoyed ourselves helping out. Of course we ate some fantastic ribs in the process.

Did I mention the VFW had a bake sale right smack dab in the middle of the festivities. Sweet treats are perfect to finish off your judging duties. I bought numerous cakes and cookies. It was a fundraiser you know.

Congratulations to Bob Moglia and his team "Alottabs BBQ" for winning Grand Championship. Today everybody was a winner.
